Why do traditional malas have 108 beads?
In Vedic cosmology, 108 is seen as a significant number: the universe as one thing (1), empty (0), and infinite (8).
Astronomically, the distance between the Earth and Sun is approximately 108 times the Sun's diameter, while he distance from the Earth to the Moon is approximately 108 times the Moon's diameter. This proportional relationship connects us to the celestial bodies that govern our natural world.
Furthermore, in Sanskrit, the alphabet is phonetic and consists of 54 letters, each of which has a masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) energy. The total of those energies gives us 108. These letters are understood to contain specific vibrational patterns and sounds that can affect the human body, mind, and spirit in beneficial ways.
Therefore, using a mala with 108 beads for meditation can be seen symbolically to harmonize the energies within us, and connecting our personal energetic cycles with the cosmic cycles of the universe.
